The Earful Tower and

 Bonjour tout le monde!

I am a fan of the Earful Tower, a podcast by Oliver Gee, who has also created a great community.  He interviews interesting people, mostly in Paris, and finds wonderful ways to share his life in the City of Light.  Earlier this year, he published a list of things to do your first (second, third and fourth) time in Paris.

If you have been to Paris, how many of these things have you done?

Fortunately, I have done all of the first list.

I have been to Paris so many times I have lost count. I have been to the Louvre; it is nice to skip the big stuff and explore all the other parts of the museum - it is the largest one in the world so there is so much more than the Mona Lisa, Winged Victory and the Venus de Milo.  There are decorative arts, tons of Egyptian relics and also the crown jewels of France (didn't know they had any, right?)
I would add to this list
11. See the stained glass dome at the Galeries Lafayette.  Fortunately it is very near the Printemps, so you can do both in one trip!

Le Train Bleu

 Bonjour tout le monde,

This past January, I went to Paris with a cousin and my daughter to celebrate a shared birthday with my cousin.  We had a great time shopping, eating, more shopping, more eating, and a visit to the Louvre thrown in.

Highlights of the trip included dinner at le Train Bleu, a fabulous restaurant that opened in 1901 as a "buffet de la gare".  That is because it is located in the Gare de Lyon (one of the 7 train stations in Paris).  Soon, this buffet became "the" place for high society travelers.  In 1963, the restaurant was named Le Train Bleu to commemorate the Paris-Vintimille” line that stopped at towns along the Mediterranean coast.

This is the most amazing restaurant; the décor is from the Belle Epoque, with lots of paintings of pastoral scenes.  The menu includes their famous rack of lamb, which is on a wheeled trolley.  I did not order that, but had the steak instead.  The waiters are amazing, and there is even a presentation about the grand history of trains.

If you have the time (and the $$) be sure to make reservations to eat at this wonderful spot. https://www.le-train-bleu.com/fr/

JE SUIS DE RETOUR! I am back!

 Bonjour tout le monde!

The past two years have not been great, so I took a little time off to get myself together.  However, it is time for la Croque Madame [lah croak mahdam] to make a return to life.

The most exciting thing is that I am traveling again.  In January, I went to Paris for my birthday.  While there, I found some exciting places to visit, and some spots that I visited again.   I was so inspired that I am going to take you to Paris with me in October!

I am going again with EF Go Ahead Tours for a great tour of Paris only.  That gives us plenty of leeway to plan activities within the schedule that we are given - there are 3 free days!  What would you like to do? Take a Black Tour of Paris? Have a champagne tasting?  Go shopping with (or without) a personal guide?  The possibilities are endless!

Informational meeting Sunday, March 19 at 3 pm PDT.  If you are in the Los Angeles area, the meeting will be in person and there will be wine and cheese.
Spread the word!  The more the merrier!

Josephine Baker will be enterred in the Pantheon

 Bonjour tout le monde!

Have you heard about Josephine Baker?  The woman who moved from the US to France and became an icon in French night club lore, mostly due to her interpretation of the "Banana Dance".  She also was a staunch supporter of Civil Rights and even campaigned for it in the States.

She was also a war hero.  Due to her popularity, Josephine Baker would cross all over Europe doing shows and carrying secret messages for the Allied Forces.  Because of that, her remains will be taken from Monaco - where she was buried in her uniform along with her medals - and buried in the Pantheon, France's greatest honor.  She will lie in the same place as Marie Curie, Victor Hugo, and Simone Veil.

France is opening up, so let's go next year!

 Bonjour tout le monde!

In February, I was talking about going to France in 2022.  Things were still a bit iffy, and folks were hesitant to think about traveling, even if they were getting vaccinated.  Now that things are opening up in France, it is time to think about coming with me to France in September 2022.

I have chosen to go with Go Ahead because it is a great company.  The itinerary is great; we spend time in the south of France, then take the TGV (very fast train) from Avignon to Paris, where we spend a few days.  If you have more time, sign up for the extension to Normandy, where you get great food and also visit the D-Day beaches that you learned about in school.

Here is the information plus the link to my personal page that gives you information about the trip PLUS it is also where you can enroll too!

Want more information?  Come to my Zoom party this Sunday, June 27, at 3:00 pm.  Contact me for the Zoom log in information: jacki.williamsjones@gmail.com or just to ask more questions.

Don't be a blockhead, or Think Inside the Box!

 Bonjour tout le monde!

One of the most interesting buildings I have seen in France is in Nice.  It is a library, (une bibliothèque in French), but you would not realize it just driving by, or cruising by in a tour bus.
Inside this head there are three floors full of books and is 85 feet high.  I understand that you enter the library through the neck!  In the evening, the block is illuminated at night with different lights.  Besides the Tête-Carrée -thinking inside the box, there are other great places to visit in the town of Nice.

Want to see this head full of knowledge?  Come with me on a tour to Nice, the Provence and Paris in September, 2022!

After filling your head, you can visit la Vieille Ville, or Old Nice.  There you can grab a glass of wine, have a traditional salade Niçoise, or maybe even an ice cream, or gelato in the square!

Find out about the tour here, and then email me: jacki.williamsjones@gmail.com to find out how you can be a part of this tour!

Notre Dame de Paris

 Bonjour tout le monde!

Two years ago, I was on a plane back from Portland; when we landed I turned my phone on - it blew up with messages like "Oh my God, are you watching?", and "Oh no, Notre Dame!"
We were still in our seats while I quickly googled Notre Dame and then gasped so loudly that people turned around.
"Notre Dame is burning!" Some fellow passengers then looked at their phones, but I think that they were not feeling it like me. It was as if we were on the cusp of losing a family member. I was glued to the television while tears were waiting to fall. It was heart wrenching to see the spire fall into the flames.
I remember all the times I have been into Notre Dame to see all the windows; each time I would light a candle to pray for a good trip. A couple of times, I was blessed enough to be inside the cathedral while the organist was practicing - it gave me goosebumps.
Notre Dame is still the heart and soul of Paris; it is still being secured so that work can begin, but she will be restored back to its original design plus the 19th century "improvements".
Some of my photos of Notre Dame (including the kilometre zero), and one of the fire.

Travel Hesitancy...

Bonjour tout le monde!

As more and more people get, thoughts are turning to traveling. Some folks actually never stopped traveling - resorts and hotels in Mexico and the Caribbean stayed open, using COVID testing during, the worst of the pandemic.  But now, we are ready to hunt out those suitcases, put liquids in those little bottles and get onto a plane - masked, of course!

When it the right time to plan a vacation?  NOW!  Even if the vacation spot of your choice is not open to those traveling with US passports, 2022 is just around the corner in the travel world.  It is not too early to check out smaller cruise companies, some of the larger ones, the vacation resorts and hotels.

Why plan now? Well, why not? You can secure a (state) room, lock in the best price while prices are good and some places are giving discounts to get their regulars back.  Think about it, prices will start going up soon...

This gives you the most time to pay for your trip - there are programs that allow you to pay
as you go, or you can save up a deposit.

Europe isn't open now...that is true, but don't you want to have a plan in place when it opens?  Be at the front of the pack, instead of trying to hunt for that perfect spot and hope that your dates are available. When you make your plans, be sure to confirm that you can reschedule if needed, or that you can cancel with a full refund.

There is still time to take a deep breath, exhale and then contact me to reserve your spot on my 2022 tour to France.  The time is now to  plan, you can pay in monthly installments, prices are low (but will increase), there are flexible rebooking options, and once the tour is booked up, you are out of luck!

Avignon, the palace and the bridge

Avignon

Bonjour tout le monde!

Located on the Rhône river, Avignon is famous for its bridge and the Palace of the Popes. The bridge, officially named le Pont Saint-Bénézet, is a medieval bridge that is found on Avignon side of the Rhône.

First a wooden bridge, then made of stone, the Pont Saint-Bénézet had 22 arches and the bridge went across the river.  However, floods damaged the arches, and now only four arches and the gatehouse on the Avignon side remain.  There is also a chapel of Saint Nicholas on a lower level of the bridge.

That doesn’t stop tourists from singing the song “Sur le Pont d’Avignon” or from dancing near the Tour Philippe-le-Bel. Since 1995, what is left of the bridge, as well as the Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes) and Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms were classified at UNESCO World Heritage sites.

The Palais des Papes was the seat of Western Christianity during the 14th century; six papal conclaves were held here electing six popes. Although popes returned to Rome in 1403, the Palace and Avignon remained under papal control until 1789 and the start of the French Revolution.

When you travel with Jacki to France in 2022, you will get a chance to tour the palace and the center of Avignon.  Parts of the palace have been restored and tourists take a self-guided tour. Afterwards, there is plenty of time to browse in the little shops and perhaps find that perfect souvenir!  The Provençal tablecloths and napkins are perfect for you or for a gift!

Reserve your spot on this tour by Friday, 3/26 with only $99 to save your place!
email: jacki.williamsjones@gmail.com to find out more and to get the reservation form.

Cassis and the Calanques

 Cassis and the Calanques

Bonjour tout le monde!

One of the most impressive sights on the Riviera, Provence and Paris tour is seeing the Calanques of Cassis.  These wonderful and unique geological formations are made of limestone or granite.  They create deep, narrow gorges that go down into the sea, which reminds many of Norwegian fjords.

The only way to see the calanques is to hike in or take a boat. Where the land meets the water there is often a small beach; people hike in with picnic baskets or they come in on small boats to spend a lovely afternoon in good weather. Boat cruises to see these calanques are made out of Cassis, a small fishing village just east of Marseilles (and which has nothing to do with the lovely liqueur, cassis). These short cruises show you a few of these gorgeous calanques between Cassis and Marseilles.

I have been lucky enough to make one of these short boat trips and see the gorgeous calanques.  If you want to see theses marvels of limestone and granite, sign up for the Riviera, Provence and Paris trip in September 2022.  Find out more about this trip at the informational Zoom meeting Monday, September 22 at 5 pm PDT.  Fill out the contact form here to get the information for Monday’s meeting, and to have me contact you.  Spread the word!  The more the merrier on this great trip.

Nice, France

 Bonjour tout le monde
Where are we going in 2022?

I'm back! And going to France in 2022!

 Bonjout tout le monde!

I realize that it has been "a minute" since I have written a blog post.  There isn't any excuse; I was trying something new, got into travel, and then...2020 happened.  It was very hard to stay inside, and not travel, even within my own city! So, I ordered groceries and food, binge watched television and learned all about Zoom.
Now things are looking up!  Restrictions are being lifted, people are getting vaccinated and we can even eat inside of restaurants!  It's time to think about travel, and there isn't a moment to lose.  I am organizing a tour of the French Riviera and Paris, with the possibility of also touring Normandy.

If you are interested, there is an informational Zoom coming up on Monday, March 24 at 5 pm
PDT.  RSVP to get Zoom info at email address .  Can't make the meeting but still have questions?  contact me at jacki.williamsjones@gmail.com or fill out the information form here:

I will always have Paris!

Everyone who knows me knows that I know and love Paris almost like a native.  Whenever a friend goes to the City of Lights, they will contact me for help with things to do.  I love to help out, so I have thought about it, and have come up with a few of my favorite places and things for me, and also for first timers.  As Audrey Hepburn once said, “Paris is always a good idea.”

Quelque chose à manger? Something to eat?

My favorite restaurant is a restaurant traditionnel – Bouillon Chartier.  It’s located in the 9th arrondissement (neighborhood). The restaurant itself is a throwback to the 19th century with beautiful ceilings, mirrors, lamps and luggage racks for all those purchases you have made.  The menu is vast with traditional dishes at great prices.  The waiters are dressed in their usual outfits and are willing to help out those who might have trouble deciding what to order.
Bouillon-Chartier, 7 rue du Faubourg Montmartre | 75009 Paris
If it is your first time to Paris, I recommend that you stop at any café and sit on the terrace (if the weather is good) to do what the French love to do – people watch. Just be aware that smoking is still permitted at outside tables.  There is usually a limited menu with croque monsieurs (grilled ham and cheese sandwich), roasted chicken or steak with fries, and some salads. Lots of wine and beer though!

So many museums, so little time !

There are 130 museums within Parisian city limits. If this is your first time to Paris, you must visit the Louvre. Once a royal residence and now the world’s largest museum, this gorgeous place is so large that you need to commit to at least several hours and to also wander through lesser known galleries.  These days, the Louvre is so popular that you really should purchase your tickets online before showing up at the Pyramid.
Highlights include the Mona Lisa, Winged Victory of Samothrace, Venus de Milo, and the Egyptian collection from Napoléon Bonaparte’s campaign. Wear comfy shoes and leave big purses behind!

My favorite museum is the Musée de l’Armée – the Army museum – which is located in the Hôtel des Invalides.  This complex also houses Napoléon’s tomb.  Antique artifacts and information cover the history of France’s warfare from Saint Louis to the war in Indochina.  This museum is a must-see for any history buff!

Take a walk!

So many places to see, so little time!  Where to go?
Tulieries Garden to the Arc de Triomphe
Leave the Louvre, cross the street then stroll through the Tuileries Garden to the Place de la Concorde.  Stop for ice cream in warmer weather, or hot chocolate when the weather is crisp.  The Place de la Concorde was once where folks were guillotined during the Revolution; it is now the home to the Obelisk, a gift from Egypt.  Keep going onto the Champs-Elysées, have a crepe while you appreciate the gardens before continuing to the shops that line the busy part of the boulevard.  To reach the Arc de Triomphe, take the tunnel, don’t try to cross the roundabout that is fed by 12 streets!

Like the High Line in New York?
Try the Promenade Plantée, built on an abandoned railway in the 12th arrondissement.  It is beautiful, and you get a lovely view of the city from the elevated walkway.  You will definitely need comfy walking shoes to go along its 2.95-mile length.  There are plenty of stairs that you can use to get to street level and wander through places that tourists often ignore.

The Opera District (and shopping!)

Located in the 9th arrondissement, the Opéra Garnier is the iconic symbol of the area.  Also known as the Palais Garnier, it is a tourist attraction for its architectural and historical importance.  The inspiration for the Phantom of the Opera, the Palais Garnier does indeed have a water source beneath the building, but it is not open to the public.  You can take tours through the Palais Garnier and see the beautiful ceiling created by Marc Chagall.

Behind the Palais are located the two largest department stores in Paris, le Printemps and les Galeries Lafayette.  My favorite is The Galeries Lafayette, which was was created in the 19th century and boasts a beautiful stained glass dome above the makeup and perfume department on the ground floor.  There is a terrace too, on the roof that gives everyone a beautiful perspective of Parisian rooftops and the Eiffel Tower, too!  There are plenty of shops in the Opera district, so make sure you have someone to help you carry your purchases!
